Project Background
1998
CONCEPT
Introducing a range of “green” construction materials and methods, emphasizing opportunities for low embodied carbon materials including regionally-sourced recycled-content and by-product based construction materials and passive solar design.

Designed to reflect a regional process open to adapt to a region’s resources and people
The Advanced Green Builder Demonstration Home introduces a range of “green” construction materials and methods, emphasizing opportunities for low embodied carbon materials including regionally-sourced recycled-content and by-product based construction materials and passive solar design. A majority of building materials were sourced within 50 miles of the project site. The project was supported by several state, regional, and municipal agencies, in addition to corporate contributions, and reflects a regional process as open to adapt to a region’s natural resources as it is to its peoples.
The design is specifically intended to bridge issues of social and family concerns such as affordability, expandability, and economic development. This is a result of a modular-based design framework using open building protocols, coupled with reliance on environmentally-conscious regional manufacture of by-product based materials.
This iconic building is located on The Center’s grounds in Austin, and is open to the public as part of our monthly First Friday Open House, and by request.
